What is Hope?

Hope is a term that we see and hear often, but have you ever stopped to think about the true meaning of the word? According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, hope means “to cherish a desire with anticipation: to want something to happen or be true.” With that being said, think about the last time you uttered the phrase “I hope.” For me, it was when I watched as Damar Hamlin was injured during the Bills-Bengal game, and I said “I hope God heals him, and he makes a full recovery.” Prior to that, I said, “I hope God performs a miracle and makes my brain tumor disappear by the time I am scheduled to have my first radiation treatment.” You see, as long as we are living, we will always have something that we are “hoping” for.

It’s unfortunate to think about it, but there are times when the words “I hope” are uttered with negative connotations at the end. Have you ever been driving on the highway, and another driver cuts you off, or speeds past you? Did you find yourself uttering the words “I hope they get pulled over and get a ticket!” It sounds simple, but this happens all the time, and sometimes, its subconscious (meaning we do it without knowing or thinking about it) — similar to unconscious bias.

Hence, the reason we coined “Hope for Good.”

Before we became Hope for Good, we were just a group of people (family, friends, and sometimes strangers), who shared something in common…the desire to help others. Some of the situations we found ourselves contributing to included:

  • Covering car payments for individuals who’d recently lost their job due to no fault of their own

  • Donating exercise equipment to a recipient who’d just had total knee replacement to aid in their rehabilitation and recovery

  • Covering the utility bills of a family in need

  • Sponsoring local members of our community with mental health education training

  • Sponsoring families with Christmas toys for children during the holidays

And so much more! And as I mentioned, all of these acts of kindness were done before we were officially ‘Hope for Good.’ As we donated and helped people in the community, they later joined the collective group with donations once they got back on their feet, and paid it forward with contributions of their own for future recipients.

You see, there comes a time in life when we may all find ourselves in need of help, and quite honestly, in need of hope as well. Whether it be something simple such as needing career development mentorship, or something catastrophic such as an unexpected illness, a natural disaster, or even the loss of a loved one, everyone will need support someday. Unfortunately, there are people in the community who don’t have a close-knit family or circle of friends who they can call on to provide this support and encouragement, which is where we come in!

We are proud to introduce you to Hope for Good!
